Garda checkpoints Ireland: Officers issue Bank Holiday warning as motorist arrested

Gardaí have issued a fresh warning for the Bank Holiday weekend after arresting a motorist for drink-driving.

As part of a weekend-long operation, officers are targeting a number of rural roads in order to try and prevent any further road deaths.

Five people have been killed and 59 people seriously injured in October Bank Holiday collisions between 2016-2020

Almost 4 out of 5 (78%)* fatalities to date this year have occurred on rural roads. These are roads with a speed limit of 80km/h or above.

And officers in Donegal were operating a checkpoint on Friday when they arrested a motorist for a dangerous law break.

The Donegal Town Roads Policing Unit conducted a number of MIT (mandatory intoxicant testing) checkpoints in the area of Donegal Town and Pettigo.

A driver who was stopped in the Donegal Town area overnight tested positive for driving under the influence of alcohol. An arrest was made and the driver was charged to appear in Court on a later date.

A Garda spokesperson warned: "This Bank Holiday Weekend and always, please drive safely and make wise decisions when it comes to road safety. Making a decision to drive whilst under the influence of alcohol/drugs can have devastating consequences. Excess speed can and does kill so please slow down!

"Wear your seatbelt and ensure others in your vehicle are wearing theirs also. Never use/hold a mobile phone while driving.

"If you are a passenger in a car and the driver is driving while under the influence or if they are driving too fast then please get out!!!"
