Garda checkpoints Ireland: More than 50 motorists fined for one offence in major operation

More than 50 motorists were fined for using their mobile phone while driving, speeding or no seatbelt in a major operation on Tuesday.

Operation Impact took place in Carlow and Wexford to clamp down on road safety with a number of issues found.

Multiple checkpoints were carried out all over the county with lockdown compliance also checked.

A garda spokesperson said: "Carlow and Enniscorthy Roads Policing Unit conducted a Joint Divisional checkpoint today on the border of counties Carlow and Wexford with the primary objective of reducing road deaths.

"Mobile phone use while driving, non wearing of seatbelts and speeding offences were the primary focus and while the majority of people were compliant, in excess of 50 FCN's were issued during Operation Impact today."

Lockdown Level 5 restrictions in full

Officers around the country are conducting dozens of checkpoints daily during Level Five.

There will be more than 2,500 uniformed officers on duty each day during the six-week lockdown.

From the middle of October An Garda Siochana carried out Operation Fanacht and Operation Navigation to support the Government's public health restrictions.

All non-essential journeys outside a 5km radius from your home have been banned under the measures.
