Garda checkpoints Ireland: More social welfare interviews carried out at spot checks on Irish roads

Multi-agency checkpoints are continuing countrywide this week as gardai are joined by multiple other authorities at checks on busy roads.

On Thursday in Wexford, Gardaí from the Wexford Divisional Roads Policing Unit conducted a multi-agency checkpoint on the N80 at Bunclody yesterday with the RSA, Revenue Enforcement and the Department of Social Welfare.

Vehicles using green diesel were detected.

Elsewhere, other vehicles were stopped which were found to be dangerously defective and were seized.

Earlier this week, welfare checks were also carried out in Waterford and similar checks have been conducted out right across the country in which motorists are asked about their social welfare entitlements in a bid to catch out fraudsters.

On Tuesday morning, motorists were asked this on the way into Waterford city near Sallypark.

A spokesperson said: "Gardaí from the Waterford Division Unit D assisting the Waterford Roads Policing Unit and Department of Social Protection conducting a checkpoint this morning."

Elsewhere, the Tipperary Roads Policing Unit carried out a multi-agency checkpoint in Roscrea with the RSA, Social Welfare & Revenue involved.

During this operation, a HGV was stopped and it was found that it had no tachograph chart, no CPC and a number of defects including broken trailer lights and a cracked windscreen.

Aside from Gardai searching for welfare scammers at checkpoints, the following incidents have all been found in recent days at various checkpoints around Ireland.

Clare

Clare Roads Policing Unit recently conducted a multi-agency checkpoint with the Road Safety Authority in Ennis, inspecting agricultural, commercial and HGVs.

Proceedings commenced on several detections that were made using the Garda Mobility device.

Cork

Fermoy Gardaí carried out a number of checkpoints this week. Numerous were offences were detected, including one driver who was arrested after testing positive for cannabis.

Cork City Road Policing Unit and Road Safety Ireland conducted checkpoints in Cork City. One truck was seized for no insurance and the driver did not have the correct Driving Licence category too. One truck was also required to replace two tyres before continuing on its journey.

Cavan

Cavan Roads Policing Unit were on patrol on the N55 when they observed a motorist on their phone while driving. They were stopped and subsequently tested positive for cocaine and cannabis. They were arrested and proceedings are to follow.

Kildare

Naas Roads Policing Unit recently conducted a checkpoint on the Main Street in Naas. Two unaccompanied Learner drivers with no L-Plates on their cars were stopped. Both cars were seized and Fixed Charge Penalty Notices were issued to both drivers.

Laois

Laois Roads Policing Unit were on patrol in south Laois when they stopped a tractor and trailer after observing the driver on the phone.

It was found that the driver was an unaccompanied Learner. A Fixed Charge Penalty Notice was issued.

Waterford

Waterford Roads Policing Unit detected several vehicles travelling above the limit of 50kph in Waterford Village. They were stopped & Fixed Charge Penalty Notices to all. Proceedings to follow.
