Ireland’s Road Policing Units have had a busy week checking up on Irish motorists on roads across the country.
From drug use to 190km/h speeds and disqualified drivers, a large number of Fixed Penalty Notices and some car seizures have been carried out so far.
Here are some of the cases that have been reported this week by gardai.
Dublin
Dublin Castle Roads Policing Unit were conducting speed checks on the N4 near Lucan on Wednesday evening when they detected a silver Volkswagen Passat travelling at 138km/h in an 80km/h zone.
Gardai stopped the driver, who proceeded to fail a roadside drug test, and was arrested with court proceedings to follow.
That same evening, Gardaí were on patrol in Harold's Cross and stopped a van that had no valid tax displayed on the vehicle.
Following further enquiries by Gardaí, the driver was proved to be serving a 5-year disqualification.
The driver was promptly arrested and the vehicle was seized.
Several MIT checks were also carried out in Dublin 8 recently by Gardaí and Reserve Gardaí.
One checkpoint conducted on James Street resulted in a drug driver being arrested, three unaccompanied learner permit holders discovered, and one uninsured motorist taken off the road.
Kildare
In Naas, the Roads Policing were operating a Speed Check when they detected a car travelling at a speed of 78 km/hr in a 50km/h zone.
The driver was pulled over and a check on the #MobilityApp revealed that the car was uninsured.
The vehicle was seized by gardai and proceedings have now commenced.
The Unit was also on patrol in Naas when they stopped a van for speeding.
Using the #MobilityApp once again, it was found that the vehicle was uninsured.
It was later discovered that the driver had given a false name, and they were a learner with an out of date permit.
They were arrested and the van was seized.
Over the weekend, the Naas Roads Policing Unit were conducting speed checks in Newbridge when they detected a driver travelling at 83km/h in a 50km/h zone.
They were stopped and the driver tested positive for cocaine and cannabis use.
They were arrested and court proceedings will follow.
Dundalk
Dundalk Roads Policing team discovered a driver of a trailer on the M1 motorway travelling at a speed of 124km/h on a road where the speed limit for towing a trailer is 80km/h.
The driver was also found to have no insurance to drive the vehicle, and so it was seized and proceedings are underway.
Cavan
Gardaí attached to Cavan Roads Policing Unit detected a driver on September 5 on the N3 at Butlersbridge travelling at 190km/h.
The road was busy at the time, and the driver could have caused a dangerous collision at this speed.
They have been arrested and will be charged in court.
Back in August, An Garda Siochana and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) issued a warning to Irish drivers to slow down after 6 people were killed within 24 hours on our roads.
Assistant Commissioner, Paula Hilman, Roads Policing and Community Engagement, said; "I would appeal to road users to slow down, drive at the right speed for the conditions, and watch out for vulnerable road users.
“Don’t drive when impaired through drink, drugs or fatigue and always wear a seatbelt and ensure passengers are wearing theirs too, no matter how short the trip.
“This advice is all the more important given the fact that Met Eireann has issued weather warnings for heavy rainfall and possible localised flooding for today and this weekend.”
