Gardai seized a vehicle in Dublin on Friday after the driver was seen carrying out a bizarre act while driving.
A section of the Dublin Roads Policing Unit was carrying out a standard checkpoint in Swords yesterday when they pulled the driver of a Volkswagen Polo for videoing them on a phone.
After looking into the person behind the wheel of the car, it was found that they were an unaccompanied learner, with no L plates displayed.
Officers seized the vehicle from the driver and will be issuing a fixed charged notice.
The Garda traffic corp confirmed the incident on social media this afternoon writing; “DMR Roads Policing were performing a speed checkpoint on the Swords Road in Dublin yesterday
“The driver of a VW Polo passed whilst recording Gardaí on his phone.
“The driver was stopped. Vehicle was seized & FCN to be issued.”
The public is reminded that learner drivers are only allowed on Irish roads if they:
- always have someone with a full driving licence in the car with you when you are driving on a learner permit. This person must have had their driving licence for at least 2 years. If the Gardaí stop you, and you are not accompanied by a qualified driver, they can detain the car.
- display L-plates to the front and rear of the vehicle at all times while driving. The plate should be a red ‘L’ on a white background and should not be less than 15cm high with a border of at least 2cm
- adhere to a reduced drink driving limit and penalty point disqualification threshold
- do not drive on a motorway
- do not to draw a trailer
- do not act as an accompanying driver
- do not carry other people for reward
