Garda checkpoints Ireland: Busy weekend on the roads as one motorist clocked speeding at 205kph

Gardai conducted checkpoints in multiple locations across the country over the weekend which saw several motorists arrested.

At one checkpoint, Longford Roads Policing Unit were conducting speed checks on the N5 when they observed a car travelling at more than twice the speed limit.

The vehicle was moving at 205kph in a 100kph zone, and gardai arrested the driver following the incident.

Elsewhere over the weekend, Naas Roads Policing Unit were conducting a checkpoint in Newbridge when they stopped a driver.

It was found that the driver had been disqualified, so they were subsequently arrested and their vehicle was seized.

At another checkpoint in Clane, the Naas stopped a driver on Sunday.

That person proceeded to test positive for cocaine and they were arrested.

In Ennis, Co Clare another motorist was spotted as driving erratically.

Gardai were on patrol in the town when they observed a car driving dangerously.

They were stopped and the driver tested positive for cocaine and opiates.

The individual was arrested and proceedings are set to follow.

Also in Clare, the county's Roads Policing Unit recorded a car travelling at a speed of 77kph in a 50kph zone while carrying out routine speed checks.

The motorist was arrested for driving under the influence following a positive roadside test for cocaine.

Gardai said their investigations ongoing, and they warned people to "never ever DUI".

Meanwhile, the Commercial Vehicle Unit attached to Dublin Castle stopped a car after observing it going through a red light.

Using the Mobility App, it was found that the driver was a Learner with no L-plates displayed and they also tested positive for Cannabis.

They were arrested, with proceedings to follow.
