Gardai made 18 arrests over the weekend at checkpoints for drink driving and other offences.
A warning had been issued prior to the weekend which said they'd maintain a strong presence on public streets and spaces.
Checkpoints were visible across the country as they appealed to people to drive safely and not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs this weekend.
However, as per some of the Gardai's various social media accounts, the following arrests were all made within the period from Friday to Monday night:
Dublin
A motorist was stopped at a Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoint in Donabate last night. He tested positive for cocaine and cannabis. The driver was arrested and his blood sample has been forwarded pending further investigation and analysis.
Earlier on Monday, Santry Roads Policing Unit detected a motorcycle travelling at a speed of 90km/h in a 50km/h zone. Proceedings have now commenced against this driver.
Meanwhile, Naas Roads Policing detected a car travelling at a speed of 168km/h in a 100km/h zone on Monday morning. The driver was arrested for dangerous driving and later tested positive for cannabis. Court proceedings will follow.
As for the other days of the weekend, the roads in Dublin were also busy as the Roads Policing Units attached to Operation Surround conducted Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoints in Tallaght, Coolock, Dun Laoghaire and Clondalkin on Friday and Saturday nights. 335 motorists were tested resulting in three arrests for positive drug tests.
On Saturday, Gardaí in Crumlin and Sundrive Road conducted high visibility patrols, no arrests were mentioned.
Connacht
On Monday, Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a road traffic collision on the N59 main Clifden Road.
In terms of coastal patrols, Enniscrone Gardaí carried out patrols in the Enniscrone / Rathlee / Easkey and Dromore West areas as part of Operation Dualgas. No arrests were mentioned.
On Saturday, Gardaí in Manorhamilton stopped a driver at a checkpoint. Following a check that was conducted on the Garda Mobility Device, it was revealed that the driver had received a 12-year disqualification in February 2020. After this discovery was made, the driver was arrested and charged for not having a licence or insurance Court proceedings will follow.
Leinster
Wexford Gardaí conducted patrols at Curracloe Beach and the Raven Nature Resort over the weekend. They were happy to report high levels of compliance from the public in regards to social distancing.
Elsewhere, Longford Roads Policing Unit carried out a number of checkpoints over the weekend. One motorist was detected travelling at 161km per hour in a 100km zone. A fixed charge penalty notice was issued and court proceedings will follow.
On Saturday night, Gardaí in Carlow and Kilkenny conducted numerous mandatory intoxicant testing checkpoints. Kilkenny Roads Policing Unit arrested one driver on suspicion of drug driving after testing positive for cocaine. Prosecution to follow.
On Monday, Gardaí on patrol in Gorey encountered a car driving erratically and in a dangerous manner. After stopping the car and performing a roadside drug test on the driver, the driver tested positive for opiates. The driver was arrested and conveyed to Gorey Garda Station for further testing.
A serious incident occurred in Meath on Saturday when 4 drug drivers were arrested at a checkpoint on the M3 in Dunshaughlin, Meath during an operation that was conducted by the Meath and Westmeath Roads Policing Units. Court proceedings to follow.
As part of the Operation Surround initiative, members of Unit B Carlow conducted a number of high visibility mandatory intoxicant testing (MIT) checkpoints across the town and county overnight.
One motorist was arrested at one such checkpoint in Carlow Town for driving while intoxicated.
A number of MIT checkpoints were also conducted in Kilkenny/Carlow. Most drivers passed the roadside breath test but 1 driver was detected to be over the limit
Munster
Earlier this morning, Cahir Gardai that were on patrol in Cashel stopped a vehicle after being alerted by the Mobility App.
It was discovered that the driver never held a driving licence. The vehicle was seized for having no insurance, driving licence, NCT or Tax.
On Monday, the Tipperary Divisional Roads Policing Unit working with the Road Safety Authority Ireland on the M8 near Cashel arrested one motorist on suspicion of drink driving.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, Gardaí from Newcastle West District arrested two suspected drug drivers while monitoring a multi-agency checkpoint.
Ulster
The Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit conducted speed checks in Letterkenny and the surrounding areas on Sunday and they detected a number of motorists who were travelling well above the speed limit.
One arrest was made and a number of fixed charge notices were issued.
Elsewhere, Ballyshannon Gardaí conducted a speed check on Sunday morning and they stopped a driver who was also found to be travelling above the speed limit. After consulting the mobility app, Gardaí discovered that the driver was disqualified. The driver was arrested and court proceedings will now follow.
Road traffic collisions that occurred this weekend
There were a series of road traffic collisions that occurred over the Bank Holiday weekend.
In Limerick, Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision involving two cars that occurred at approximately 2:30pm on Sunday, 6 June at Garrienderk, Kilmallock, Limerick.
The driver and only occupant of one of the cars, a woman in her late 30s, was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital where she later passed away.
The female driver and male passenger of the other vehicle, both aged in their 70s, were taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Elsewhere, Gardaí are investigating a fatal single-vehicle road traffic collision involving a motorcycle that occurred N69 at Skehenerin just outside Listowel, Kerry, at approximately 2.20pm on June 6.
The motorcyclist, a man aged in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Finally, Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a road traffic collision in Loughrea, Galway on Sunday, June 6.
Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the collision on Gort Road at approximately 2.10am. The collision involved a motorcycle and another vehicle.
The driver of the motorcycle, a man in his 50s, and the pillion passenger, a woman aged in her 30s, were both taken to University Hospital Galway for treatment of serious injuries.
The driver of the other vehicle failed to remain at the scene.
