One Irish driver has faced the hefty price of having their car seized after officers operating a checkpoint discovered a lengthy rule break.
The Longford Roads Policing Unit stopped a Renault driver and after a few questions, discovered they had no valid NCT or tax record on their car.
Gardai immediately seized the vehicle and have said proceedings to charge the driver will follow.
In a post on Twitter, they confirmed: “Longford Roads Policing Unit stopped this driver and found that they had not possessed any NCT or Tax on their vehicle for the past two years.
“The vehicle was seized and proceedings are to follow.”
In Ireland, it is an offence to drive an untaxed vehicle and it is an offence to drive without displaying a current tax disc.
If caught doing so, you could face up to 5 penalty points and will have to appear in court.
The court can then decide whether or not to issue a fine of up to €5,000, or send you to prison for up to 6 months.
It is also an offence to drive a vehicle in a public place without a current NCT certificate - applying to vehicles from the fourth anniversary of their first registration.
The penalty for driving without an NCT certificate is a fine of up to €2000, and/or up to 5 penalty points and/or imprisonment for up to 3 months.
