Garda checkpoints: Driver caught going over 150km/h on major motorway after stormy conditions as arrest made

Gardai arrested a driver after they were caught at a checkpoint doing over 150km/h during stormy weather.

Road conditions are made even worse when surface water is left on after rain showers, which there were plenty of on Wednesday evening.

Gardai conducted speed checks on the N7 this morning while it was raining and in some parts snowing.

They managed to clock the motorist going a huge 169 km/h - nearly 70km/h over the road's speed limit of 100 km/h

A spokesperson explained: "Naas Roads Policing Unit conducted speed checks on the N7 this morning. This motorist was found travelling at 169kph in heavy rain. They were stopped and the driver was arrested for dangerous driving."

Driving in excess of the speed limit will result in a fixed-charge fine of €80 for speeding offences.

Drivers will also automatically receive 3 penalty points on their driving licence.

Anyone caught will have 28 days in which to pay the fixed-charge fine from the date the notice issues.

Failure to pay the fixed charge will result in an increased fine of €120 and possibly more penalty points up to a maximum of 5 penalty points.

If you were not the driver of the vehicle, you must complete the relevant section on the notice and return it within 28 days of its issue.
