Gardai have had a busy time policing Irish roads, and with the weekend approaching it's likely that things will be busy as the festive season approaches.
Roads Policing Units have been in operation up and down the country, and have clamped down on speeding vehicles and drivers testing positive for drugs while numerous people had their cars seized for a variety of reasons.
In one instance, the Naas Roads Policing Unit detected a vehicle driving erratically while operating a checkpoint in Eadestown.
When they pulled the motorist over gardai discovered they had no tax or NCT.
A further search confirmed the driver was disqualified with no insurance, and they also failed a roadside drugs test for Cannabis.
Meanwhile, the Waterford Roads Policing detected a driver travelling at 138 km/h in a 100km/h zone.
Once they pulled the driver, it was found that they were an unaccompanied learner, with no L plates displayed.
The car was quickly impounded and a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice was issued.
The Waterford Roads Policing Unit were conducting further speed checks this week when they detected a motorist travelling at 158km/h in a 100km/h zone.
They were stopped and a Fixed Charge Notice was issued to the driver.
The Naas Roads Policing Unit were conducting speed checks on the N7 when they found a car travelling at 160km/h in a100km/h zone.
They were stopped and the driver later tested positive for cannabis and was arrested.
The same unit was later on patrol on the M4 and stopped a vehicle after observing it driving erratically.
They tested positive for cocaine and they were arrested.
According to garda statistics, 72,240 fixed penalty notices have been issued for speeding and 119 people have been killed in accidents on Irish roads up to November 2021.
