Garda checkpoint update: Poignant message from officers as they monitor Level Five compliance

Gardai issued a poignant message to the public as they continue to monitor lockdown compliance across the country.

Officers from the Kilkenny and Carlow district said that they "understand and empathise" with people travelling for personal reasons during Level Five restrictions.

Gardai are currently carrying out checkpoints on 132 main roads and around 1,000 secondary roads each day as part of Operation Fanacht.

Sharing a photo from a Kilkenny checkpoint, a spokesman said: "As checkpoints continue like the one at Templemartin, Kilkenny today, we continue to ask people the purpose of their trip.

"People tell us their business and sometimes their reasons for travel are tragic and very personal.

"While our purpose at these checkpoints is to limit unnecessary travel, we do understand and empathise with those travelling for the most personal reasons."

Meanwhile, a system of fines to ensure Covid-19 restrictions are being adhered to is expected to come into force this week.

The maximum fines were set out in legislation last month but the exact amounts for specific offences have yet to be officially announced.

Those who host or travel to house parties, refuse to wear a mask or travel beyond 5km for non-essential reasons will face fines ranging from about €60 up to €2,500.
