Garda applauded for bravery after saving life of woman who had slipped into Donegal river

A Garda officer has been hailed as a life-saver after he saved a woman who had fallen into a river in Donegal.

Garda Peter McGee of Letterkenny Garda Station responded after an emergency call was made on Tuesday.

The call detailed how a woman had slipped into the water near the Port Bridge in Letterkenny.

A Garda spokesperson explained: "On arrival Garda McGee entered the water assisted the woman and held to the wall of a tunnel under the bridge until further assistance arrived.

"This incident was likely to end in tragedy and we commend Garda McGee for his bravery and quick actions."

Members of the public were quick to praise Garda McGee.

One commenter wrote: "Well done Garda McGee on your bravery. It is a very scary thing to find someone in water but then to enter and rescue someone is totally brave."

While a second made reference to Garda McGee's brothers Eamon and Neil, both of whom have lined out for Donegal's GAA team.

He wrote: "Well done Garda Peter McGee. You showed the same courage as your brothers on the football field. Fair play to you."

While a third person said: "A huge well done to Garda McGee on such a courageous and bravery act"
