Garbage truck drivers will walk off the job on Monday over pay negotiations, affecting waste collection in Canberra's south.

About 40 garbage collectors will join the 24 hour strike on Monday, which will impact waste collection across 23 southern suburbs.

Transport Workers Union ACT branch secretary Klaus Pinkas said negotiations with contractor SUEZ over the workers' Enterprise Bargaining Agreement had been ongoing for almost four months.

Collections missed on Monday won't be caught up at a later time as it could cause too much disruption, a Transport Canberra and City Services spokeswoman said.

Green waste, bulky waste and wheeled bin assistance services won't be impacted by the action.

Residents who normally have their rubbish collected on Mondays can dispose of up to three large plastic garbage bags for free between Saturday October 31 and Sunday November 8 at temporary drop off sites across the affected suburbs.

These are:

. Waramanga - Walpiri Place, off Namatjira Drive

. Kambah - 66 Springbett Street, near the tennis courts

. Gowrie - 7 Finlay Place, near Erindale Scout Hall

. Weston - Hilder Street, at the Weston Neighbourhood Oval
