Garbage truck driver dies two days after Mount Wallace crash in early morning fog

A 69-year-old garbage truck driver has died in hospital after an early-morning crash between two trucks in a small town west of Melbourne on Monday.

Police said thick fog was hampering visibility as two garbage trucks travelled west along Mt Wallace-Ballark Road at Mount Wallace, near Bacchus Marsh, about 5:30am.

One of the drivers was teaching the other driver the route when the two trucks crashed, resulting in injuries that left the 69-year-old Melton South man in a critical condition.

The man was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Monday with life-threatening injuries and died in hospital on Wednesday evening.

The second driver, a 56-year-old Melton West man, was not injured in the crash.

Police say heavy fog reduced visibility in the lead-up to the Anzac Day crash. (ABC News)

Moorabool Shire said the man was an employee of a waste contractor engaged by the council.

"Moorabool Shire councillors and staff extend their deepest condolences to the family and friends of a truck driver who has sadly passed away in hospital following a recent waste vehicle collision," a spokesperson said.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and preparing a report for the coroner.

WorkSafe is also investigating the cause of the collision.
