Garbage sorting on amenity space pits BPLR residents against Pune Municipal Corporation

PUNE: Residents of Baner-Pashan Link Road are fed up with Pune Municipal Corporation’s officials turning a blind eye to their constant appeals to refrain from using the amenities’ space near Regent Plaza as a garbage segregation point.

“The segregated garbage is never picked up completely by the garbage trucks. The plot looks like a dump yard with a pervading stink. Currently, due to summer, the stink is limited to close-by areas, but come monsoon, it is going to be a mosquito breeding site,” said Vinod Gupta, a resident.

Nitin Phansalkar from Rolling Hills Society said that they do not open their windows due to the stink. The garbage has brought more hungry stray animals. Pest problems have increased, he added. “Strays, flies and rats have increased because they feed from the wet garbage dumped here. Even hotels dump their garbage at night without segregating it. We have been complaining about it since 2017, but there is no respite,” Phansalkar said.

Deepika Bhargav, a resident of Echelon Society, said hungry stray animals drag the waste to the roads, spreading the mess all over the area. “The gates to the plot must be closed at all times. People dump things in the dead of the night that the PMC would not pick up otherwise,” Bhargav said.

Rajendra Chutar, president of Baner Pashan Link Road Welfare Trust, said the matter is discussed in every mohalla committee meeting. “The amenity space should be developed as a park or something useful for society, not to dump waste,” he said.
