The ongoing pay dispute between garbage truck drivers and contractor SUEZ appears certain to have ongoing knock-on effects for the ACT government, with waste services again likely to be affected in the week ahead.
Household rubbish and recycling bins were not collected on Monday as garbage truck drivers walked off the job over pay negotiations.
Twenty-three suburbs in Canberra's south were affected by Monday's 24-hour strike as workers seek changes to their Enterprise Bargaining Agreement.
Missed collections to the affected suburbs could not be caught up by the contractor as it would cause too much disruption to other areas.
Alternative rubbish disposal arrangements are in place for affected residents, with temporary, rubbish only drop-off points at:
- Waramanga (Walpiri Place);
- Kambah (Springbett St, near the tennis courts);
- Gowrie (Finlay Place, near the scout hall), and;
- Weston (Hilder Place, at the neighbourhood oval).
The sites will be open from 9am to 6pm and will be staffed during these hours.
Up to three large plastic garbage bags can be disposed of for free.
Proof of ACT residency such as a driver's licence is needed to demonstrate the resident is from a suburb whose scheduled bin collection was affected.
