I’m sure the employees of Newsquest will be delighted to hear that their ultimate boss in the United States, Gannett’s president and chief executive, Gracia Martore, earned just £8.4m last year.
The Rochester Business Journal reports that her “compensation package” included £680,000 in salary and a bonus of £1.9m plus share awards of about £2.7m and a pension upgrade to more than £3m.
According to Gannett’s annual filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, four other senior Gannett executives were well “compensated” too.
Victoria Harker, chief financial officer, got £1.8m; Robert Dickey, president of community publishing, £2.7m; David Lougee, president of the broadcasting division, £1.7m; and John Williams, president of digital ventures, £2m.
Gannett, based in Virginia, owns 82 daily US newspapers, including USA Today, plus about 850 weeklies, and has interests in 46 television stations.
Its British publishing division, Newsquest, has more than 200 newspapers, magazines and trade publications. Its 17 paid-for dailies include The Herald in Glasgow, the Northern Echo in Darlington, the Bradford Telegraph & Argus and the Brighton Argus. It employs more than 5,000 people across the UK.
Gannett has announced plans to separate its publishing businesses from its broadcasting and digital businesses.
