THANE: The Thane crime branch arrested an alleged drug peddler and seized 110 kg of ganja worth over Rs 11 lakh from the Kapurbawdi area of the city on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Ambalal Jat, was arrested, said Vikas Ghodke, the senior inspector of crime branch unit-5.
The officer said that they had information that the a tempo laden with the consignment would be coming from Bhiwandi towards Thane city from the Balkum area. Hence, a team of policemen intercepted the tempo near Kapurbawdi fire brigade at around 9pm, on Thursday.
Upon carrying out the search, the police found the ganja wrapped in packets.
The police then carried out the panchnama and seized the consignment and registered case with the Kapurbawdi police station under various sections of the the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The police suspect that there could be a bigger racket in supplying ganja to the city and they are carrying out the further probe.
“We are probing the source of ganja as well as to whom the consignment was to be transported. We have certain leads in connection with the case and the other people involved in the racket would be arrested soon,” Ghodke informed.
The police have also seized the tempo in which the consignment was found.
