Gang 'petrol bomb' cars and burn furniture in night of disorder in Dungannon

Police are investigating reports of disorder in Dungannon on Saturday night.

During a number of incidents, reported from around 10.40pm on August 7 to around 2.30am on Sunday, August 8, masonry and petrol bombs were thrown and furniture set on fire in the Ballygawley Road area of the Tyrone town.

It's understood approximately 20 to 30 people, including a number of masked individuals, were involved.

Police say that two of their vehicles were damaged after a petrol bomb and other missiles were thrown.

In one of the incidents reported, a petrol bomb was thrown at a car being driven by a member of the public.

In a post on social media, Police Mid Ulster said that local residents are "horrified" by the incident.

They added: "The community wants better for their area and to live without fear. We appeal to those who think this behaviour is acceptable to take a look at what destroying your own community achieves. This and putting the emergency services under even more pressure is not the way forward."

DUP councillor Kim Ashton said reports of what happened in the area are "extremely concerning."

Ms Ashton added: "This type of behaviour is not wanted on our streets. The PSNI need to take robust action against those involved. I would appeal to anyone that can help the PSNI with their enquiries to get in touch with them."

Inspector Knipe said: "These were disgraceful scenes that took place last night and we are thankful that no one was injured. What happened last night is completely unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.

"We will continue to monitor the area and would warn anyone contemplating becoming involved in such criminal activity to think twice.

"As we investigate these incidents, I am appealing to anyone who was in the area last night and witnessed what happened, or who captured what happened on their dash cam to call us on 101, and quote reference number 2086 of 07/08/21."
