A gang of thieves ram-raided a shop before stealing cash from an ATM.
Three men used a car to smash through the shutters of a Co-Op store in Childwall on Wednesday night.
The gang then abandoned the silver Nissan X-Trail and fled in a different car towards Woolton .
Merseyside Police attended the Bentham Road shop following reports it had been targeted at around 11.35pm.
The Nissan is thought to have been used by the gang to force their way inside.
Security shutters and the front of the shop, which was cordoned off by police on Thursday morning, were severely damaged in the incident.
The men, who were in dark clothing and had their faces covered, entered the store, damaged an ATM and stole cash from it.
They reportedly left the scene in a dark coloured car, with the Nissan found by police nearby.
The vehicle has been seized by police and will be forensically examined.
Appealing for information, Detective Inspector Jennie Beck said: "Our investigation is in its early stages and while we are looking at CCTV footage and speaking to potential witnesses, we are also keen to hear from anyone else who saw or heard anything suspicious near the Co-op at around 11.35pm.
"We will act on all information provided, so tell us what you know and help us bring those responsible to justice."
