Gang of scrambler bike thugs lead police on 15 mile chase across Merseyside

A gang of scrambler bike thugs led police officers on a 15 mile chase from St Helens to Speke.

The group were first spotted in Garswood at around 4.30pm on Sunday before they then left the area and headed towards St Helens along Rainford Road.

It was here that the gang then travelled the wrong direction up Dentons Green Lane, a one way street, before heading towards Whiston and Tarbock Island.

Merseyside Police officers followed closely behind but the gang ignored traffic signs and lights and almost caused a number of crashes with other drivers.

During the course of the chase, three people, including one teenage boy, were arrested by police.

As the bikes continued onto the Knowsley Expressway towards Speke, a 21-year-old man from the Sefton area was arrested by officers on suspicion of dangerous driving, drug driving, failure to stop, having no insurance and taking a vehicle without the owners consent.

Two bikes continued onto the A562 where a 16-year-old boy, from Garston, was detained on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle dangerously, theft of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified, failing to stop and licence and insurance offences.

A 26-year-old man, also from Maghull, was stopped by officers on St Helens Road and also arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, drug driving and failing to stop.

All three have been released under investigation as enquiries continue.

Inspector Bernard McHugh said: “Through Operation Brookdale, we will continue to work to eradicate the illegal use of these bikes, and I would like to emphasise how important the help of the public is in doing this.

"If you know of where these bikes are being ridden or stored, let us know so we can take action.

"We regularly seize such vehicles off the back of your information, and if we can do so before they are out causing harm in the communities, then all the better.
