Gang of 60 children torch bin and smash bus window in night of 'chaos'

A bus window has been smashed and bin torched in an evening of 'mayhem'.

Around 50 to 60 young people have been seen setting fire to a wheelie bin at the Duckeries in St Helens and throwing rocks at a bus, smashing its window. Merseyside Police said this will be investigated as they ask parents: "Do you know where your children are?"

Posting on social media, the St Helens policing team shared the shocking photo of the torched wheelie bin, which has been completely gutted, causing some damage to the ground also. The force confirmed a police car had also been damaged after a rock was thrown on Friday evening.

The full statement read: "Do you know where your children are? Approximately 50 to 60 of them at The Duckeries setting fire to a wheelie bin and throwing rocks at a bus smashing its window. This will be investigated.

"Another threw a rock at one of our patrol vehicles causing damage also, this too will be investigated. This could cause the vehicle to go off the road and unable to service incidents effectively. Remember, we could be helping a loved one. Know where your kids are!"

Many people responded to the "disgusting behaviour" and reported "chaos" across the St Helens area over the weekend. A dispersal order has been put in place this weekend covering The Duckeries area.

The dispersal zone in place (St Helens Police)

The zone will be in place from 4pm Saturday, February 4 until 11pm on Sunday, February 5. It covers Newton Road and Fleet Lane as police attempt to crack down on anti-social behaviour.

The order comes under Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour & Policing Act 2014, which gives police officers and police community support traffic officers powers to direct people who are engaging in antisocial behaviour or are likely to become involved in such incidents. These powers will not be used for anyone visiting the area and going about their daily business.

Under the legislation, officers have the power to seize any item used in the commission of anti-social behaviour. Anyone who has previously been directed to leave the area and returns, may ultimately be arrested.
