Gang of 20 yobs attack and launch fireworks at firefighters in Mischief Night misery

Firefighters were attacked by a gang of around 20 yobs while they were putting out wheelie bin fires in Fazakerley.

Fire crews responding to incidents across the region this evening have had fireworks and eggs thrown at them in a night known on Merseyside as Mischief night.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said it has responded to 56 emergency calls so far this evening, including 11 deliberate fires involving wheelie bins, rubbish and bonfires.

At around 8.30pm on Saturday, firefighters were called to five wheelie bin fires on Longmoor Lane in Fazakerley.

As crews tried to extinguish the fires, a gang of around 20 yobs threw fireworks at them and at members of the public.

In another incident on Haswell Drive in Stockbridge Village, a staff member from fire service had eggs thrown at them.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said its staff have been physically and verbally attacked five times this week alone.

Thankfully no one was injured during the incidents but the fire service has slammed those behind the attacks.

In a statement on Twitter, a spokesperson said: "Firefighters, advocates and all fire service staff are NOT targets. It is not 'a laugh' to throw items such as fireworks, bricks and eggs at them as they carry out their duties.

"They sort human beings with families and loved ones waiting for them at home. They are members of your community.

"They go out each day and night, 24/7, 365 days a year to keep the people of Merseyside safe.

"Throughout the pandemic, as well as carrying out their day-to-day duties, they have delivered prescriptions, food parcels and administered vaccinations.

"They go above and beyond every single day. They are there for you, your friends, your family when they need it most - is this the thanks they deserve?

They continued: "We're not out to spoil anyone's fun - we are trying to keep you safe. Deliberately setting fire to wheelie bins and rubbish is not ok.

"Verbally and physically attacking emergency service workers is not ok. It is a criminal offence.

"This time of year is extremely busy for us and for all emergency services. Don't make it worse."
