Gang breaks into Bargain Booze, changes the locks and sets up huge cannabis farm inside

An organised crime gang broke into a Bargain Booze before setting up a huge cannabis farm.

The opportunistic group even changed the locks to prevent the legitimate owners of the site, which had been empty for several months, from gaining access.

Police found 375 plants growing inside the property, in Elliott Street, Tyldesley, on Thursday morning.

Officers said the plants were spread across three floors of the building.

They have since been seized.

GMP Leigh, Atherton & Hindley have taken to Facebook to share pictures of their findings.

Police say an organised crime gang were running the cannabis farm (GMP)

In a post, they said: "The Atherton and Tyldesley Neighbourhood team discovered a cannabis farm on Ellliott Street in Tyldesley this morning.

"This was at the site of a business premises that had been left empty for several months.

"The offenders had broken in and changed the locks to prevent the legitimate owner from gaining access.

"When the building owner informed us of this we attended and found an extensive farm totalling 375 plants.

"The nursery was in the basement and the larger plants spread across the two floors of the building.

"These sorts of farms are run by organised criminal gangs, so a significant seizure such as this has the result of taking a large source of money out of the pockets of criminals - a positive result for our community."
