Gaming Networks Slowly Recover Following Widespread AWS Outage

A widespread Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage temporarily took down thousands of apps, websites, and online games on Monday, including major platforms like PlayStation Network, Roblox, Fortnite, and even sports titles like Rematch.

The outage — which stemmed from a DNS issue affecting AWS’s “US East 1” region — disrupted service for much of the day and caused login and matchmaking problems across a wide range of games. AWS hosts infrastructure for a significant portion of the internet, meaning everything from entertainment apps to banking systems experienced connection failures or slowdowns.

According to AWS’s official status page, the company began implementing mitigations throughout the afternoon to resolve “launch failures for new EC2 instances” and reduce “networking connectivity issues.” By the evening, AWS reported “significant signs of recovery,” though the service was still flagged as “degraded.”

Epic Games confirmed that Fortnite and its related services were back online after being impacted earlier in the day. “The service provider outage is resolved and Fortnite is back online, alongside all other Epic services,” the company shared on its official status page. “Players should again be able to log in and matchmake without issue.” However, at the time of writing, Epic still lists Fortnite‘s website as having “degraded performance.”

Rematch was also affected by the outage. Players reported issues entering matches and, in some cases, were unable to launch the game entirely. The game’s devs acknowledged the issue on its official social channels, confirming that services are now back up and running as normal. However, some users have continued to report lingering connectivity problems as AWS systems stabilize.

While the outage has largely been resolved by now, AWS continues to monitor performance and connectivity within the affected region. The incident highlights how dependent much of the gaming industry — and the wider internet — has become on Amazon’s cloud infrastructure.

As of now, most major gaming services have returned to normal operations, but AWS warns some users may still encounter intermittent issues as full recovery efforts continue.
