After the AI integration backlash, GameStop is preparing to remove one of the biggest benefits tied to its Pro Membership program. The company plans to eliminate reward point earnings, a feature many customers relied on to save money on future purchases.
For years, the rewards system gave members a small incentive to keep buying physical games, collectibles, and accessories from GameStop.
With digital game sales continuing to grow, many gamers already have fewer reasons to visit stores. The latest change could make the membership even less appealing to longtime subscribers.
GameStop Rewards Points Will End in 2026
According to an internal employee memo shared with Kotaku, GameStop will stop offering reward point accumulation for new Pro Membership signups beginning July 15, 2026.
Existing members who renew before that date will still be able to earn points for a limited time. However, that benefit will end on August 15, 2026. Afterward, all remaining reward points will expire, bringing the program to a close.
Under the current system, members earn roughly 2% back on eligible purchases. The rewards were never huge, but frequent shoppers could still save a noticeable amount over the course of a year.
Someone purchasing a new $70 game every month, for example, could earn around $17 in rewards annually. That amount could be combined with other member perks and discounts.
Membership Fee Isn't Changing
One reason the announcement has sparked criticism is that the annual membership price will remain the same.
GameStop's Pro Membership will still cost $25 per year even after rewards points are removed. Many customers feel the company is taking away a major benefit without offering a replacement.
This isn't the first time the membership program has lost value. Previous changes removed access to the gaming magazine Game Informer, reducing another perk that helped justify the subscription fee.
As a result, some members are questioning whether the service is still worth renewing.
Employees Are Worried About Customer Reactions
The decision has also raised concerns among GameStop employees.
Some workers have reportedly voiced frustrations online, saying it will become more difficult to convince customers to sign up for Pro Memberships once rewards points disappear.
Others point out that customers already have trouble redeeming points due to technical issues. Removing the feature entirely could create even more frustration during checkout.
Several employees have also criticized the company's sales expectations. Many feel pressure to sell memberships despite shrinking benefits and limited incentives for staff.
What Is Going on with GameStop
The move appears to be part of GameStop's larger effort to reduce costs and adapt to a gaming industry that increasingly favors digital purchases over physical copies.
While cutting the rewards program may help lower expenses, it also risks pushing away loyal customers who still prefer shopping in stores.
