Picture this — you’ve just come home after spending over $700 on a brand-new Nintendo Switch 2, only to find its screen punctured by a stapler.
That’s exactly what happened to a few unlucky individuals who purchased their new Nintendo Switch 2s from a GameStop in New York this week.
What happened on the Nintendo Switch 2 launch?
The long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 finally dropped in stores this Thursday, and has already been a smash hit. The console outperformed expectations for pre-orders and has already sold out on its first day. Anticipating this, some major retailers even cancelled pre-orders because they couldn’t keep up with the demand for the console.
On the day of release, gamers lined up for hours, waiting to be the first ones to grab a console. Some even attended midnight launches, receiving their consoles at a normal time of 1am.
So, imagine the devastation of coming home to find two noticeable punctures in your screen. Additionally, due to high demand and lengthy shipping estimates, it could take a month or more to replace. I’d be furious, incensed even! GameStop, count your days!
Meanwhile, US folks who had pre-ordered from Walmart received a snack and a free drink on opening night. I’m sure we all know who won that night.

How has GameStop responded?
GameStop took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to respond, posting a clip from the film Office Space where the film’s antagonist takes away a character’s beloved stapler. The announcement also confirmed that they will be offering free replacements to customers whose Switches were affected, and the incident had only happened at a single isolated store. So, hey, it’s nice they’re having a sense of humour about it.
Now, while it would be easy to make fun of GameStop here, it isn’t entirely their fault. The Nintendo Switch 2’s packaging is a bit unique. The Nintendo Switch 2’s screen sits face-up at the very top of the box with only a thin layer of cardboard to protect it.

Due to the unique packaging, we may hear more stories of Switch 2 shipping damage over the weekend. But at the very least, hopefully these ones are staple-free.
