Games Workshop rallies as players jump back into fantasy worlds amid covid gloom

Games Workshop's dungeons and dragons-style fantasy games provided a rare ray of light in the covid gloom today as the company declared it had seen a rapid bounceback in players since it started reopening stores around the world.

The group whose figurine-based games such as Warhammer have become cult classics in a certain niche of society, said the recovery had beaten its expectations.

As a result, pre-tax profits for the year ended 31 May are now expected to be no less than £85 million. That is a full £15 million higher than it predicted n April, while in the thick of the covid crisis.

Sales should come in at around £270 million, the company said.

The company said it took out numerous government subsidies during the peak of the crisis but said: "In light of these results, we do not intend to make further claims and we aim to repay any amounts that have already been received, where possible."

Games Workshop has been one of the stock market phenomena of recent years, having shot up from below 500p in 2017 to 7100p today. After falling sharply during April to 4000p they rapidly rebounded to 8000p - higher than they were before covid struck.

Shares were up 10% or 769p at 7869.17p
