Games Workshop Group, the fantasy miniatures retailer behind the Warhammer brand, has reported better than expected trading.

The company, which was founded in London in 1975, has continued to defy Covid-19 gloom and said trading since its last update in September is ahead of the board’s expectations.

It today said it estimates that pre-tax profits for the six months to November 29 will not be less than £80 million. That is up from £58.6 million

The group, led by Kevin Rountree, said: “This has been driven by healthy growth in our online and trade channels. Our retail channel is still recovering from the Covid-19 closures both currently (170 stores) as well as earlier in 2020.”

Its factory and warehouses are still in operation under Covid-19 measures.

In September Games Workshop said that trading for the three months to August was ahead of forecasts.

In July when it published its annual report for the year to May, boss Rountree said: "An amazing set of results - the best year in Games Workshop's history, so far. You can once again see from these results that our business and the Warhammer hobby are in good shape.”

A number of firms that cater for hobbyists have seen high demand this year as people have had more time at home.

Earlier this year AIM-listed collectibles seller Stanley Gibbons said it had seen a “material increase” in website users, and evidence of more people showing an interest in coin and stamp collecting.

Stanley Gibbons said in April: “We have seen a gratifying increase in both new and 'lapsed' customers coming back to the hobbies."
