GAME set to close 40 stores across UK

GAME has announced it plans to shut 40 stores across the UK.

Up to 27 sites have already had notice served on them, with another 13 premises to be approached in the near future, according to The Mirror .

In Bristol there is a GAME store in Merchant Street in the city centre and in South Gloucestershire there is one at The Mall in Cribbs Causeway.

A GAME spokesperson said: “We are working closely with landlords throughout the UK to ensure that we do not have to vacate the 40 locations which could lead to a number of job losses.

"However, we are facing a challenging retail market and GAME with its extensive retail footprint, needs to restructure and landlords need to work with us in setting realistic, fair rents.”

Prior to the planned closures, GAME had a total of 540 stores across the UK and Spain.

The full list of closures is not yet known, but sites so far earmarked for include Mansfield, Canterbury, Watford, Glasgow Fort, Leicester, Derby, Norwich Chapelfield, Lakeside, Bexleyheath and Carmarthen.

It is not known how many jobs would be affected, according to The Mirror, which reports that GAME announced its sales were broadly stable at its most recent results, while profits rose to £25.8 million.
