The Liberal member for Bennelong, John Alexander, is set to retire at the next federal election.
The 70-year-old former professional tennis player told constituents in an email on Friday afternoon he would not recontest the seat he has held since 2010.
Mr Alexander was forced to resign from the seat in 2017 following the citizenship scandal but subsequently defeated former NSW premier and current Labor senator Kristina Keneally at a by-election.
Bennelong, in Sydney's northwest, was famously held by former prime minister John Howard from 1974 until 2007.
It is considered to be a safe Liberal seat.
