Game of Thrones voted greatest TV show of 21st Century and beats Stranger Things and Doctor Who

Game of Thrones has been voted the greatest TV show of the 21st Century.

The US fantasy HBO drama, which lasted for eight series, beat shows such as Stranger Things and Doctor Who in second and third spot.

The top ten includes Sherlock, The Great British Bake Off and Gavin & Stacey, according to more than 2,500 votes cast on the website Digital Spy.

Richard Brake, who played the Night King in GoT, said: “It felt like a really special, special show in the history of storytelling.

“So I was incredibly grateful that I got to not only be a part of it, but I got to be the baddest badass on it as well.”

The series received 58 Primetime Emmy Awards, the most by a drama series, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019.

Digital Spy editor Laurence Mozafari said: “It’s not too hard to see why Game of Thrones has resonated so strongly with the public. It was also extremely interesting to see placings for UK shows.

“They prove quintessentially British humour and genres really do strike a special chord.”

Netflix's Stranger Things was the runner-up (Netflix)

Gavin & Stacey is among the shows hoping to win more awards at the TV Baftas, which are being held on Friday night.

The top ten:

1: Game Of Thrones

2: Stranger Things

3: Doctor Who

4: Sherlock

5: Breaking Bad

6: The Great British Bake Off

7: Killing Eve

8: Gavin & Stacey
