Game of Thrones stars surprise Children's Cancer Unit families

A group of local parents and carers of those living with cancer have been given star treatment at the Game of Thrones Exhibition .

Fans of the show were surprised by Barristan Selmy, Meryn Trant and Bowen Marsh from the show - who gave them an exclusive insight to the Titanic Exhibition .

Ian Beattie, who is more commonly known as Ser Trant told Belfast Live that he was 'honoured to meet such amazing families'.

The East Belfast man said: "The families didn't know that we were going to show up at the exhibition. We tried to keep it a secret from them so it was just amazing to see their faces when we walked through the door - they recognised us straight away.

"They were all a wonderful group of people. The evening was all about them and that is how it was meant to be.

"I thoroughly enjoyed myself bringing them round the exhibition explaining different things and telling them stories about my time. It was great to be able to give them the special treatment they deserve."

The 54-year-old said he took the families and carers round the exhibits as a fellow fan of the show, rather than as an actor.

"The whole reason myself, Ian and Michael did this was to give back to these families," he added.

"I was absolutely delighted to be asked to take part in such a special surprise for them. It's not often you get a chance to give back and when you do, you take it with both hands.

"The families we had the chance to meet are in some very tough situations, so anything at all that I can do in the future to lighten their load, I will be there.

"We were lucky to be in the show, we loved the show and anything that we can do to highlight good causes in the memory of the show is welcomed.

"Even though it is over, it still brings so much happiness and escapism to families who are getting it tough - and I love that.

"I can't thank the families enough for a great night. This wouldn't have been possible without the hard work of Anna from the CCUC and to the wonderful team of staff down at the exhibition who made the evening unforgettable for me and the families."

Anna McDonald, Communications Manager for the Children’s Cancer Unit Charity told Belfast Live: "We are so grateful to Ian and the TBL International team.

"It is so important for our special parents and carers to take some much-needed time to look after themselves and to take a break from the stress of the hospital, treatment and, which can often be the case, isolation.

"This has been a truly unique event and everyone has thoroughly enjoyed it."

Mr Beattie told Belfast Live that he has watched Game of Thrones 'over and over again' and that he will 'never get sick of it'.

"There were mixed reviews about the final season but I just think a lot of people didn't want it to end," he added.

"They wanted more from it. Not everybody was going to be happy with the ending because they predicted different things.

"I do think that there was a big bag of mixed emotions there. I didn't want it to end myself but I thought it was a fantastic show. I loved every minute of it and I was among the half of fans who thought the final episodes were fantastic."
