Brienne of Tarth's Game of Thrones heartbreak: Gwendoline Christie breaks silence on THAT scene

Gwendoline Christie said she was left heartbroken for her Game of Thrones character Brienne of Tarth after she lost her virginity to Jamie Lannister.

The pair consummated their feelings in episode four after she admitted to being a virgin in a drunken game of Truth.

But despite their intimate moment, Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) later left Winterfell for King's Landing in a bid to return to Cersei Lannister.

"I was so upset for her,” Christie told Entertainment Weekly. “I know it's just a character and I'm an actor who’s lucky to do her job. It's so heartbreaking.

“But it's life isn’t it? Life is heartbreaking. I never assumed they would be together. I didn't think that would happen. And now I can feel a million hearts breaking.”

Christie said despite the heartbreak she loved that Brienne didn’t “crumble” and instead returned to work.

“That feels refreshing, a woman can be happy without a companion,” she said.

“Women don't have to be defined by their partner and that's good. But my god. That's the Game of Thrones, isn't it? Just when you think things are going to go well it punches you harder than ever in the guts.”

Some fans were left fuming with writers David Benioff and DB Weiss who they accused of using Christie’s character as a “pawn for Jaime’s character development”.

Others accused them of virgin shaming after Tyrion appeared to mock Brienne for being a virgin after she stood up and left the room on being questioned.

Game of Thrones is on Sky Atlantic, tonight at 9pm. It is also available on NOW TV.
