Game of Thrones showrunners to direct next Star Wars, Disney confirm

The next Star Wars trilogy will be directed by the creators of Game of Thrones, Disney has announced.

David Benioff and DB Weiss, who adapted George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels to television, had previously been announced as working on an instalment in the Star Wars franchise.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has since confirmed that the forthcoming Star Wars release, set for release December 2022, will be directed by the duo.

Speaking at an event in New York, Iger declined to give further details. The film will mark the first part in a new trilogy, with the next two films coming Dember 2024 and December 2026.

Disney previously announced that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was working on a trilogy of films. When these will be released remains unclear.

Both the Game of Thrones showrunners' and Johnson's films are expected to be completely separate from the Skywalker saga, the final part of which will be JJ Abrams's The Rise of Skywalker

While Benioff and Weiss have been broadly praised for their stewardship of Game of Thrones, the latest season of the HBO show has been divisive. While some critics have loved the action pieces, others have criticised the pacing and character arcs.
