Game of Thrones season 8: Twelve burning unanswered questions from episode one

Game of Thrones has returned for the long awaited eighth and final series and, as ever, there is a whole bunch of questions that need answering after the first instalment.

With Jon Snow finding out his real parentage and a number of characters being reunited after they thought the other was dead, we are all clamouring to find out what happens next

Here are those burning questions that need answering.

1. What will Jon do now that he knows his parentage?

The biggest question so far. Jon Snow has had his history rewritten by finding out he is half Targaryen.

Not only is he not the bastard son of Ned Stark, he is now the 'rightful' heir to the Iron Throne.

The question is, what will Jon do about it, especially when there is the small hassle of the White Walkers on the horizon.

2. How will Daenerys Targaryen react to learning Jon’s her nephew and the heir to the Iron Throne?

As important is how Daenerys will react to the news about Jon Snow, if he decides to tell her.

Not only is she now sleeping with her nephew, she has also lost has claim to the throne, based on the line of succession.

3. What next for Bran and Jaime after their awkward reunion?

As reunions go, the stare out between Bran and the Kingslayer was one of the more intense.

Jaime tried to kill of Bran in the very first episode of Games of Thrones and now he is face to face with him again, knowing that his actions had failed.

4. Will Sansa Stark ever embrace Daenerys?

There was a frosty welcome for the Dragon Queen in Winterfell and it would seem that Sansa is not best pleased with the arrival of Daenerys.

Will the tension stay simmering or will Sansa take more direct action to remove her home?

5. Will Cersei succeed in taking the seven kingdoms?

What is for certain about Cersei Lannister is that you cannot trust her and as the seven kingdoms steel themselves to take on the undead, she could just snatch the lot.

6. Will Daenerys become pregnant with Jon’s child?

This could either make a muddle of where everyone stands when it comes to who rules, or it could be consolidation of the Targaryen at the top table of the seven kingdoms.

7. Will Jon Snow ride a dragon into battle?

After a fast track tutorial in riding a dragon - basically grab what you can and hold on - will Jon Snow now ride a dragon into battle against The Night King. He is a Targaryen after all.

8. Will the Rhaegal and Drogon have to kill Viserion?

Speaking of dragons, will it be down to the two remaining dragons to take down the now undead Viserion.

The seemingly unstoppable 'zombie dragon' may only be matched by the fire of his siblings.

9. Will Jaime Lannister kill Cersei despite her being with his child?

A prophecy had shown that Cersei would die at the hands of her little brother and while it hasn't been fully accurate, there is still the possibility of either Jaime or Tyrion finishing her off.

She is seemingly pregnant with Jaime's baby but will he bump her off for the greater good.

Of course, she is one of the four people left on Arya's 'kill list', so there's every chance that they will come face-to-face.

10. Will The Hound and The Mountain fight to the death?

The one battle that fans of Game of Thrones are clamouring for is the possible match up between Sandor 'The Hound' Clegane and Gregor 'The Mountain'.Clegane.

With The Hound back in the presence of Arya, could he join her to finish off Cersei, with The Mountain to be climbed before they get to her?

11. What does the Night King actually want?

One of the biggest unanswered questions is exactly what the Night King wants to achieve.

Is it total domination, the joy of battle or just marching towards sunnier climes - it is hoped his intentions will soon be made clear.

12. Who will live and who will die?

That's the big question and on a show which is more that happy to kill off the big names, it is certain that no-one is safe.

Expect heartache as some of the best-loved characters meet their doom before the finale.

Who is still standing by then is a lottery to predict.
