Game of Thrones season 8 theory: Jon Snow death foreshadowed in season 1?

The Army of the Dead has arrived at Winterfell and not everyone at the Northern fortress will survive.

Game of Thrones season 8 episode 3 promises to be Game of Thrones: Battle of Winterfell is 'longest' film battle ever made , but now many are wondering if the fate of series hero Jon Snow ( Kit Harington ) is doomed to die in the Great War.

One school of thought believes that Jon's death was foreshadowed back in the first season in an exchange between the boy who believed he was the bastard son of Lord Eddard Stark ( Sean Bean ) and the Kingslayer himself, Ser Jaime Lannister ( Nikolaj Coster-Waldau ).

Going back to the second episode of the first season, The Kingsroad, the two men have an exchange at Winterfell as Jon prepares to leave for his new role with the Night's Watch.

"A sword for the wall?" asks Jaime as Jon has a sword worked on by a blacksmith - later revealed to be Needle for Arya Stark (Maisie Williams).

"I already have one," replies Jon.

Jaime retorts: "Good man, have you swung it yet?"

"Of course I have," Jon responds.

The Kingslayer - famed for his fighting prowess and murder of the Mad King Aerys Targaryen - then delivers what could be both a put down and an ironic piece of foreshadowing.

"At someone I mean… strange thing the first time you cut a man, you realise were nothing but sacks of meat, blood and bone to keep it all standing.

"Let me thank you ahead of time for guarding all from the perils that lie beyond the wall, Wildlings and White Walkers and what not.

"I’m grateful for the good strong men like you protecting us."

This could be just a piece of developing Jaime to be a bit mean, or just foreshadowing the dangers that Jon does indeed go on to face beyond the wall as a member of the Night's Watch - as throughout all the seasons he has dealt with Wildlings and White Walkers.

Alternatively, it could also be unknowingly predicting that Jon will be the Prince Who Was Promised who will defend the living from the Army of the Dead - including Jaime.

The pair will fight side by side at Winterfell - oh, how times have changed!

The focus on how delicate human bodies are doesn't bode so well for Jon though.

Even if he survives the Battle of Winterfell, there is still time for Jon to meet a tragic end.

Game of Thrones continues weekly on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK.
