Game of Thrones season 8: HBO used 'drone killer' to ward off spoilers

Game of Thrones spoilers have been leaked onto the web countless times, whether due to cast members revealing tiny details or HBO accidentally uploading entire episodes early by accident.

For the series’ eighth season, the producers went to extraordinary lengths to prevent spoilers finding their way online.

According to Sophie Turner, a drone killer – a device that takes down drones – would watch over the set, bringing down any unwanted surveillance gear being used by the paparazzi.

“If a drone flies above sets, there’s a thing that can kill the drones, which is really cool,” she said at New York Comic-Con, according to EW. ”It creates a field around it and the drones just drop. It’s very X-Men.”

Turner also revealed that, while filming, they referred to the show as “The Tree of Life” to dupe photographers, and filmed alternative versions of scenes.

The extra measures put in place by HBO has not prevented all spoilers from leaking. Earlier this year, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jaime Lannister, filed court papers which revealed how many season eight episodes the actor will appear in, spoiling whether he survives until the end.

There have also been people attempting to film scenes from miles away and the occasional set photo has, inevitably, found its way online. Still, at least no one has leaked any of the scripts yet.

Game of Thrones season eight does not have a release date, but is expected early next year
