Game of Thrones finale: Where did Daenerys' dragon Drogon go in season 8 episode 6?

Game of Thrones concluded with a finale full of resolutions – but one question that remains involved the whereabouts of a particular character.

*Major spoilers follow – you have been warned*

The finale of the HBO series saw Jon Snow (Kit Harington) kill Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) after she sent Drogon on a fire-breathing rampage through King’s Landing, murdering thousands of innocent civilians in the process. As her body lies on the floor of the throne room, Drogon burns down the Iron Throne, takes her body and soars off; it’s the last we see of him.

But, where did he go? The best clue arrives in the small council meeting where we learn that Dragon was last seen flying east. Exactly where is never said thanks to an interruption from Bronn, but it’s no stretch to assume that Drogon is flying towards Valyria – the same place he flew to after disappearing in season five.

Geographically in Westeros, Valyria – the ancestral home of Targaryens – is situated east of King’s Landing. It seems as if Drogon returned Daenerys to her home.

Perhaps this mystery will be definitively answered in the final two books from George RR Martin? Time will tell.

This is what Emilia Clarke said abut her character’s final scene, one that Harington knew would prove “divisive”, in an interview this time last year. Fans are highlighting that this ending was revealed back in season two.

You can find a ranking of every character – from worst best – here and the same for every episode below.

The show is available on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK.
