Game of Thrones reunion special is coming, says HBO

A still from the first season of 'Game of Thrones' ( HBO )

A special reunion episode of Game of Thrones has been filmed, HBO has confirmed.

Sean Bean previously revealed that a special, featuring past and present cast members, was filmed in Belfast earlier this year, with Conan O’Brien hosting the one-off episode.

Entertainment Weekly reports that HBO will not broadcast the episode. Instead, it will be made exclusively available on the upcoming Game of Thrones complete series set box set, packaged alongside seasons one to eight.

A release date has not been announced, although the box-set will inevitably come after the eighth and final season concludes – the series returns in April 2019 and will last just six episodes.

Speaking previously about the special, Bean – who played Ned Stark on the show – said: “It was the last episode, so we all got together. They decided to get all the characters together for a bit for this big show in Belfast and he kind of hosted the evening.”

Asked whether he keeps in contact with his fellow cast members, Bean added that he has “only seen them on a couple of occasions”.

“It’s funny with work, you don’t really keep in touch,” he continued. ”You do so many types of jobs in that part of the world. It’s just like whenever I see old friends or even old drama school friends, it’s just the same, we pick up where we left off last time.”

Game of Thrones season eight will air on HBO and Sky Atlantic in April 2019. Read everything we know about the series here.
