Game of Thrones prequel: George RR Martin making House Targaryen series

Another Game of Thrones prequel is on the way – this one focused on a family that fans of the HBO show will know very well.

According to Deadline, HBO is on the cusp of ordering a pilot for a new project that will focus on the history of House Targaryen.

It’s said to be from author George RR Martin and Ryan Condal, who worked on TV show Colony

HBO has declined to comment.

Should the project get the greenlight, it’ll reportedly be based on Martin’s Fire & Blood book and has been in the works since last year.

It’ll follow the first prequel series, which recently finished shooting its pilot episode. It’s still unclear whether the show, which stars Naomi Watts, Naomi Ackie and John Simm, will get a full season order, but it’ll be set thousands of years before the events of Thrones and will chronicle “the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into it’s darkest hour”.

Game of Thrones came to an end with a controversial eighth season in May. Its creators David Benioff and DB Weiss, who are currently working on a new Star Wars trilogy, recently signed a lucrative $200m deal to make future projects exclusively with Netflix.
