Game of Thrones petition: Fans want HBO to REMAKE season 8 'with competent writers'

Game of Thrones fans have signed a petition urging HBO to re-make the eighth and final season of the hit show with "competent writers."

The Change.org petition asks the US broadcaster to give fans “a final season that makes sense” and has received more than 240,000 signatures so far.

The appeal comes after viewers were left divided by the events of episode five, The Bells, which saw Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) raze King’s Landing to the ground, killing thousands of innocent civilians.

“David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on,” the petition’s introduction reads.

Disappointed: Some fans are not happy with Daenerys' recent actions (HBO)

“This series deserves a final season that makes sense. Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!”

Disgruntled fans shared their reasons for signing in the comments section, describing the most recent instalments as “disastrous” and a “complete mess.”

“I understand it’s GOT but don’t trash 8 yrs of character building for what they think will shock and awe us. It sucks,” one signatory wrote.

“Season 8 was a landslide in character progression and writing,” another added, while a third said: “I can’t just sit and watch my favourite show getting destroyed like this. We fans deserve better.”

Standard Online has contacted HBO for further comment.

Jon Snow actor Kit Harington previously hinted that the show’s ending is unlikely to please every fan, telling Entertainment Weekly: “You have to do a conclusion in six episodes. Not every person is going to be happy with the conclusion of something so big.

“The whole nature of the speed of the [story] has to be different from earlier seasons. I think if you watch it all back to back years later [fans will] think it went so quick.”

Game of Thrones concludes on Monday at 2am on Sky Atlantic and will be repeated at 9pm. It will also be available to stream on demand on NOW TV.
