Game of Thrones: Natalie Dormer praises 'real and dirty' sex in HBO series

Natalie Dormer as Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones (HBO)

Natalie Dormer has defended Game of Thrones for presenting sex in a "real and dirty" way instead of glamourising it as many TV shows do.

The 33-year-old actress plays the ambitious Margaery Tyrell in the hit HBO series and insists that showrunners Dan Benioff and DB Weiss include nothing gratuitous in their storylines.

"Sex and romance is a huge part of human motivation. So long as it's informing the story then I don't see what the problem is," Dormer told The Telegraph. "Obviously no-one likes gratuitous sex or gratuitous misogyny the same way people shouldn't like gratuitous violence.

"But I think Thrones is quite good. The violence is quite naturalistic. It's not hyper-stylised. It's not glamourous. The sex is quite real and dirty as well. It's about those raw, visceral qualities of human life that make good drama."

Shocking Game of Thrones scenes

Dormer does not worry about filming sex scenes (she might be after reading Henry Cavilll's recent admission...) and claims never to have felt pressured into doing them.

"Welcome to being an actress under a certain age in the industry," she laughs. "But you know there are sensitive men in the industry as well. It's not just men against women. Benioff and Weiss are liberal-minded Americans who believe in equality and we're all serving the story."
