Game of Thrones finale: Fans are convinced they know where Drogon took Daenerys Targaryen

Game of Thrones fans are convinced they know where Daenerys Targaryen was laid to rest after deciphering a huge “hint” dropped in the finale.

Daenarys, played by Emilia Clarke, was stabbed to death by her lover, and nephew, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) in harrowing scenes.

In a rage at Dany’s death, and unable to wake her, Drogon burned down the Iron Throne before flying off. Later, Samwell Tarly reveals he had been seen heading “east”.

To the east of Westeros lays Essos, the likely birthplace of the Targaryen line thousands of years ago in Old Valyria.

Valyria was destroyed by a volcano with the Targaryen house and the dragons the only survivors. They then travelled to Dragonstone to rule Westeros.

Fans think Drogon wanted to serve Daenarys one last time by laying her to rest in the place her ancestors were, and where her lineage can be traced back to.

But other fans have taken the theory further, wondering whether Drogon had taken her to Asshai to resurrect her as the “Undead Dragon Queen of the Shadowlands.”

“Dany was told numerous times that she needed to go through Asshai to attain her final destiny,” wrote one Reddit user. “Perhaps Danys greatest failure was ignoring this advice, and Drogon may be giving her a 2nd chance to do it.

“Drogon was last seen headed East. It’s very possible he is headed to his birthplace (egg-laying place?) and the land where other Dragons live. This is a natural development. Drogon would have no reason to stay in Westeros/Essos alone when the Shadowlands hold his kind. He could also be taking Dany to Asshai because he knows she can find help there.”

In the aftermath of the finale, actress Clarke said that she “stood by” her character and the “logical” ending to her story.

“After 10 years of working on this show, it’s logical,” she told Entertainment Weekly, adding: “Where else can she go? I tried to think what the ending will be. It’s not like she’s suddenly going to go, ‘Okay, I’m gonna put a kettle on and put cookies in the oven and we’ll just sit down and have a lovely time and pop a few kids out.’ That was never going to happen. She’s a Targaryen.”

She finished: “But having said all of the things I’ve just said… I stand by Daenerys. I stand by her! I can’t not.”
