Game of Thrones final season trailer fires up the fans - and keeps them guessing

As trailers go, the snatch glimpse of the new - and last - series of HBO mega-hit Game of Thrones promises much and it answers nothing.

The tantalising look-ahead to the final season of the epic fantasy drama captures the series' trademark dark brooding tension with flashes of flames and snow and lurking threats within the shadows.

Something big is clearly building but we're all unsure what and it's no wonder that avid viewers of the long-running drama - HBO's most-successful ever - can't wait for the season eight debut on April 14.

But exactly what they're waiting for, and what lies in store, is anyone's guess.

Game of Thrones final season date confirmed in new trailer

The newly-released trailer begins with character Arya Stark, played by Maisie Williams, seen running away from something - or somebody - as her voiceover ominously says: “I know death - he’s got many faces. I look forward to seeing this one."

And, as the clip plays out, with more sinister hints of a big battle to come, it provokes a wealth of questions and theories.

Viewers have taken to social media to share their thoughts, with many guessing what might be in store for some of the central characters. Among the drama's familiar faces is Newcastle's Ben Crompton who has told in an early interview with The Chronicle how his role in the mega-hit nearly passed him by.

On Twitter, one fan, writing as 'Atiku's Last Born', tweeted: "I strongly feel Bran will be very influential this season"; while Morgan thought: "Jamie has some of the best character growth in the whole story! "

Another, tweeting under the name Game of Photos, said after watching the trailer: "I'm shaking"; and Aaron agreed, replying: "I seriously was too. I got chills and was nervous....from watching a TRAILER."

One called JC was apparently already lamenting the end of the series, saying: "One day we’re all going to look back at this & remember that we lived through TV history... I am not ready."

C.KimmelHengst added: "I don't want it to ever end, either" and Maraudstyle tweeted: "It's been an epic ride. While binge watching it has probably been very enjoyable for those who did it, being there from the start... waiting for the new seasons, reading articles and watching teaser trailers and talking with fellow fans.... nothing beats that journey."

So now, with the countdown underway to the big reveal - or, rather, the start of it - it's a matter of enforced patience until April 14 when the first of season eight's six feature-length episodes gets under way.

As one fan commented online: "The trailer is dark and full of terrors", another wrote: "I'm sure that on the 14th of April there will be no one at school or at work."
