Game of Thrones fans raise thousands for charity in a show of support for Kit Harington

Game of Thrones fans have raised thousands of pounds for charity in a show of support for Kit Harington.

The actor, who played the character Jon Snow on the acclaimed show, was recently checked into a wellness retreat to deal with "stress and alcohol use".

After the news was reported by the press, Game of Thrones fans decided to begin raising money for Mencap, a UK based charity that helps people with learning disabilities. Harington has previously supported Mencap, appearing in a video for the charity. Over £40,000 has been pledged so far.

"Kit Harington has given so much to the fans of Game of Thrones over the past decade playing the King in the North, Jon Snow," reads the JustGiving page.

"He absolutely nailed his performance and we loved every second of screentime we had with him.

"This fundraiser is here to show Kit that we're incredibly thankful to him for the sheer amount of love and skill he put into Jon Snow for us to enjoy."

Harington recently revealed that he sought therapy after feeling “unsafe” following his character's infamous "death" scene at the end of season five. He added that he found himself under such intense scrutiny following the scene’s airing that he began feeling “vulnerable” in public.
