Game of Thrones bosses will be 'very drunk and far from the internet' when final episode airs

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have said they plan to be “very drunk” and “very far from the internet” when the show’s final episode airs.

Revealing their plans for the finale, Weiss told Entertainment Weekly: “We’ll be in an undisclosed location, turning off our phones and opening various bottles.”

Benioff added: “At some point, if and when it’s safe to come out again, somebody like [publicist Mara Mikialian] will give us a breakdown of what was out there without us having to actually experience it.”

“I plan to be very drunk and very far from the internet.”

The pair went on to explain that they have been discussing storylines for the fantasy drama’s eighth and final series since 2014, with Weiss telling the publication: “We’ve known the major beats for at least five years.”

He also said that there was “a lot more weight and pressure” on them as they worked on the show’s final moments, but “the motivations behind each scene” were clear as they had been considering the storylines for so long.

“On the one hand, when you’ve been working on something for 10 years, knowing you’re writing the last episode is harder because there’s a lot more weight and pressure on those scenes,” he told the magazine.

“‘Is a line right?’ seems more important than in seasons past. On the other hand, the motivations behind each scene are something you’ve been thinking about for five years, so the foundations in your mind are stronger for what you’re putting on paper.

“But you still find yourself spending a lot more time to get it right.”

Benioff and Weiss this week released a Spotify playlist which contains the “answer” to the show’s ending.

Titled Game of Thrones: The End is Coming, it features 50 tracks designed to recreate the mood of the final series.

“The answer to the ending is 100 per cent hidden in the playlist choices,” they told Spotify’s For The Record. “No one will believe us, but it’s true.”

The first episode of season eight will air on HBO in the US on April 14 and will be broadcast simultaneously on Sky Atlantic in the UK at 2am on April 15.

It will be repeated at 9pm the same evening, and will be available to stream on NOW TV
