Swedish actor, Max Von Sydow, best known for his roles in Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal, The Exorcist and as Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon has died at the age of 90.
The actor's agent confirmed that Sydow - who also appeared in Game of Thrones - died at his home in France.
A prolific actor of both European and American films, Sydow, made his mark on cinema with Bergman's The Seventh Seal in 1957 as well as Wild Strawberries and The Virgin Spring.
In all, Von Sydow made 11 films with Bergman but his most iconic was The Seventh Seal which sees him play chess with Death.
He went on to star in Hollywood blockbusters in the 1960s & 1970s like The Greatest Story Every Told, Three Days of the Condor and, of course, in 1973, William Friedkin's The Exorcist.
In the groundbreaking horror he starred as priest, Father Lankester Merrin who exorcises the demon out of Linda Blair's Regan.
In later years he became known to audiences as the camp Ming the Merciless in comic-book movie Flash Gordon, Blofeld in Never Say Never Again, Game of Thrones' Three-Eyed Raven and he a small roll in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
In 1991 Von Sydow filmed alongside Matt Dillon and Sean Young at Port Talbot Steelworks for the film A Kiss Before Dying.
The opening sequence of the film showed the Abbey Coke Ovens area of the steelworks alongside the main pumphouse. Sydow plays Thor Carlsson the father of Sean Young's character, Ellen, in the erotic thriller.
He was nominated for two Oscars during his career - including best actor in 1998 for Pelle the Conqueror.
His other Academy nomination was best supporting actor for his role in 2011's Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.
His final role was in the submarine accident drama, Kursk, released in 2018.
