Game in Carmarthen is closing as part of plan to shut 40 stores across the country

A leading gaming store has announced that it is closing its outlet in Carmarthen .

Game has made the announcement as part of what the company calls its “store rationalisation programme”.

The store, located in Merlin’s Walk shopping centre in the middle of the town, is one of 40 locations to close across the UK, the gaming giant confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

The Carmarthen store has been open since the early days of Merlin’s Walk – known as Greyfriars shopping centre until 2009 – although in that time it has relocated to a smaller premises within the centre.

Some 13 Game stores across the UK, including those in Mansfield, Canterbury, Watford, Glasgow Fort and Leicester, have previously been informed of the closure plans.

On Wednesday a further 14 stores, including the one in Carmarthen, were notified.

The rest of the sites – making a total of 40 – will have their notice served in the near future, according to Game.

A spokesman for the company said: “We are working closely with landlords throughout the UK to ensure that we do not have to vacate the 40 locations, which could lead to a number of job losses.

“However, we are facing a challenging retail market and Game, with its extensive retail footprint, needs to restructure and landlords need to work with us in setting realistic, fair rents.”

The company has not confirmed when the Carmarthen store will close and how many jobs will be affected.

News of Game's closure is the latest setback for the high street in Carmarthen.

Before Christmas, it was announced that Topshop, Topman and Miss Selfridge would all close their town centre stores in March.
