Game?

Tony and Connie are entertaining the new neighbours. But clearly they are not used to giving dinner parties, and control freak Connie doesn't want to leave anything to chance. She has planned the evening as if it was an office meeting, prescribing the topics of conversation and dictating when certain things should happen. When James and Franky arrive, they are certainly not sticking to the rules. They appear to have no idea of social niceties at all, spending most of the time with their tongues down each other's throat when they are not vomiting up the food.

There is some good material in the latest show from Tangled Feet; the final image of a man bound and gagged with sticky tape by his controlling wife is a powerful one. This exploration of the games we play and the social rules of engagement covers similar territory to Abigail's Party and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? but it isn't as funny as the former or as savage as the latter. The characters and the audience are let off the hook.

The show is particularly observant about the different ways in which men and women engage in chitchat and one-upmanship. The men's verbal boasting quickly descends into physical tussling, while the women watch each other's behaviour obsessively and comment upon each other's appearance in a false display of friendship. But apart from its bleak climax, this is never more than a mild comedy of manners with an added physical twist. A missed opportunity from a bright young company.
